Money in Costa Rica

Hi,

I'k heading to Tamarindo, Costa Rica in March, and I'm wondering if I need to modify a bunch of dollars into colones. According to everything I've read, United states dollars are widely accepted, but that sometimes it'south improve to have local currency. Has anyone plant they needed a lot of colones? Has anyone been to Costa rica and simply used US dollars?

As well, if anyone knows a eating place to two in Tamarindo that they would recommend, that would be great info to have.

Whatsoever insight is appreciated. Thanks.

Information technology seems to me it'southward common courtesy to use the currency of the country you're visiting, whether they accept Us dollars or not.

Ever best to ATM colones and/or use Visa CC

or you get shafted on the exchange rate only

500C/1USD when yous are supposed to go 560C/1 USD

and so if you use dollars you lose over x% each time

Nosotros've never exchanged our money; we bring dollars and go colones back in change. They've been accepted everywhere we've gone. We went to a tiny fruit stand up in the middle of nowhere, and they however gave u.s.a. the practiced exchange rate - kind of surprised that they were accepted there, merely they were. Credit cards are pretty well accepted at hotels and restaurants and for tours, but be enlightened that a lot of cc companies will accuse yous anywhere from i-3% additional cost for a strange transaction fee. Also if you plan to use your credit cards at all, let the company know before you leave for your trip and then they won't freeze your account.

Thanks to everyone who posted useful data. I wouldn't have thought to use an ATM to get a improve commutation rate.

JeanH, let me exist clear: at no time was I suggesting I didn't want to change money, I was asking a practical question.

Pitiful if sounded snippy. It but seems similar if you travel to a different country, you should but use their currency and not even enquire nearly using U.s.a. dollars, other than Panama, of course....

The Costa Rican people take ever been very gracious. Sometimes you lot'll run across menus with U.S. prices or a cab commuter volition say "12 dollars" - then many Americans visit there that I recall it's merely become part of their culture. If y'all make up one's mind to utilise your U.S. dollars, I don't think you'll become the perception that they're looking down on y'all for it. Really upwardly to you.

goddess, do yous ever bank check out tripadvisor? I've found their eatery reviews to be pretty comprehensive, so you might cheque over at that place for reviews if you don't find it here.

Volcanogirl, I have looked at Trip Counselor in the past, thanks for reminding me. Fodor's is my first call usually, and the advice I've gotten has always been solid. A betoken you have just proven.

I will likely follow the advice to become colones at an ATM, since I'thousand Canadian, and would prefer to avoid paying an substitution fee twice.
